Lots of Refrigerators
Posted 14 days ago, 2:43pm

While campaigning, I’ve seen lots of refrigerators along the way. One common feature of every model, new or old is the pride and pleasure of being part of the family. Along with storing cold food, the refrigerator’s place in most families is directly in the middle of everything. Proudly displaying everything from report cards to pizza menus, the refrigerator is a true multi-tasker.

It warms my coils to see a family use a refrigerator like this:

Patti's Refrigerator Patti writes, “So here’s my fridge, top covered with pictures, wrapping around to the side. And the bottom covered with our perpetual calendar, number and letter and shape magnets for our pre-schooler.

I had made them all nice and neat, and just before I took the picture he decided it needed a little adjustment. So it looks like always!

Patti R.”

Emily's RefrigeratorEmily writes, “I claim the top half as my domain. Lots of pics of friends & family. The magnets are a collection of old & new. Many from trips - like our honeymoon. Some from way back when I had my first apartment in college. A few were ones I had given my grandmother (when she passed away they gave them to me).
The bottom half is our son’s artwork display. He pretty much manages the gallery and puts what he wants on there. Pretty typical fridge I’d say.”

Deb's RefrigeratorDeb writes, “Our Fridge is kind of a catch-all place for papers. I LOVE magnets, and my hubby and stepson find things to stick under them as fast as I can get them.
The yellow paper is the high school’s schedule for March, and there are at least three or four calendar magnets from various real estate agents (the guy who sold us our house already wants us to sell it, apparently) and sports teams.
Then there are the obligatory pizza coupons, drawings from my nieces, a report card and an academic calendar from my husband’s university. All in all, a normal refrigerator door.”

Teri's RefrigeratorTeri writes, “Mostly there are just family photos on it…home work hanging off the side…school calendars…paint strip sample..magnets..children’s hand painting….handprints…and my “you’re the best mom in the world” drawing from my seven year old.
My two sons are in the biggest picture in the blue shirts. That’s me holding my brand new (and only) nephew right by my face beneath my boys photos…my sister is holding him down in her arms above my boys’ photo. Ours is stainless steel too (no one told me the magnets wouldn’t stick!) so everything on the front is TAPED on…ick.”

Teri, I hear you. Try this. Adhesive Magnetic Tape gets the job done without creating another job for you.

Show us your fridge, and we’ll add it to the “Gallery!“

Storage, Organization and Me
Posted 23 days ago, 6:39pm

When I meet people on the campaign trail, I’m often asked questions that aren’t related to me personally, but to anyone that uses a refrigerator. Here’s one of my favorites: Susan asks, "I’m always struggling with keeping my kitchen organized. Your handy shelves and storage drawers are great for storing stuff on the inside of the refrigerator, but what can you do about organizing stuff on the outside?"

Susan, I know what you’re saying. Some of the best ideas for kitchen organization involve the refrigerator. Here are a few ideas I’ve found:

This simple organizer holds notes, menus, and reminders. Plus it has a place to write notes to your family.

The Fridgefile

If those slots aren’t big enough, these pockets can hold a small phone book.

Magnetic Bamboo File Box

Keeping your schedule organized goes a long way to keeping the family happy. Here’s a nice dry-erase calendar that has room for the busiest family.

Weekly Fridge Grid Pad

And if you really want to get the most storage space out of your refrigerator, try Endo magnet clips. As you can see, they hold just about anything.

Speaking of communicating with the family, there is a touching book about the power of communicating with the family using notes on a refrigerator.Life On The Refrigerator Door"Life on the Refrigerator" is about a busy Mother and Daughter that rarely find themselves in the same room at the same time, and it often seems that the only thing they can count on are notes to each other on the refrigerator door. When home is threatened by a crisis, their relationship experiences a momentous change. Forced to reevaluate the delicate balance between their personal lives and their bond as mother and daughter, Claire and her mother find new love and devotion for one another deeper than anything they had ever imagined. Available from HarperCollins. [link]

Here is a quick video review of the book:

This is just more proof that the refrigerator is "The cool communicator." Communicating with the family, sharing memories, holding to-do lists and expressing a family’s style is what a fridge does best... Oh yeah, and keep stuff cold.
